Nafkah Anak Kepada Orang Tua Dalam Pemikiran Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani: Kajian Atas Bab Nafaqah Kitab Qūt Al-Ḥabīb Al-Gharīb

The sandwich generation phenomenon in Indonesia highlights the severe dual burden on the productive age group as they struggle to balance the financial demands of their nuclear families with supporting elderly parents, contrasting with Islamic doctrine that establishes birr al-wālidayn and relatives' maintenance (nafaqah al-aqārib) as integral lineage responsibilities. Employing a library research design with textual-hermeneutic and socio-juridical approaches analyzed via content analysis, this study examines the legal construction of parental maintenance in Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani’s al-Tausyīḥ alongside its conditions, limits, and hierarchy within the Shāfi‘ī school to determine its relevance for contemporary Muslim families. The findings reveal that Sheikh Nawawi frames parental maintenance as a legally binding obligation (taklīf) covering basic food, clothing, housing, and healthcare to preserve human dignity, yet strictly conditions it upon the parents' financial inability (‘usr) and the child's proven capability (yusr) based on the threshold of fāḍil ‘an qūtihi wa qūti ‘iyālihi, which prioritizes the rights of the nuclear family. Ultimately, through the dialectic between birr al-wālidayn and the principle of preventing harm (daf‘u al-ḍarar), the text clarifies that financially constrained children are not religiously bound to provide absolute support, leading to recommendations for reorienting financial ethics within Muslim households and integrating relative maintenance boundaries into national social security systems.
