Abstract

This study focuses on the controversy surrounding Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School and its impact on public perception of religious moderation. The primary objective of this research is to analyze the role of media in shaping narratives about Al-Zaytun and to explore the steps of religious moderation that can be implemented in response to the controversy. A qualitative approach with a case study methodology was employed, involving interviews with students, school administrators, and local community members, as well as document analysis and observations. The findings indicate that media significantly influences public opinion, often highlighting controversial aspects that reinforce negative stigma towards the school. Although Al-Zaytun strives to implement values of moderation, there exists a gap between the institution's good intentions and the public's understanding. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of collaboration among Al-Zaytun, media, and the community to foster constructive open dialogue. Furthermore, the study recommends increased efforts to educate the public about religious moderation and the media's responsibility in reporting. Future research is suggested to explore the long-term effects of religious moderation in other Islamic boarding schools and to utilize quantitative methods for a more comprehensive understanding of the issue.
