Sharia Analysis of the Distinction of Mahdhah and Ghairu Mahdhah Worship and Its Relevance in Modern Religious Practice Analisis Syar’i Atas Distingsi Ibadah Mahdhah Dan Ghairu Mahdhah Serta Relevansinya Dalam Praktik Keagamaan Modern

Abstract
The division of Islamic worship into mahdhah (purely ritual) and ghairu mahdhah (non-ritual) is a significant conceptual framework in Islamic jurisprudence that shapes Muslim religious practices. Mahdhah worship is ta‘abbudi in nature, governed strictly by textual evidence, while ghairu mahdhah is ta‘aqquli, allowing room for rational interpretation and legal reasoning. This study aims to critically examine the Sharī‘ah-based foundations of this classification and evaluate its implications in contemporary religious life. Employing a qualitative approach with content analysis of classical and modern fiqh literature, the findings highlight that the distinction lies not only in sources of law but also in flexibility and rational applicability. A proper understanding of these categories is essential to prevent extremism in religious observance and to promote the integration of Islamic spiritual values into modern socio-economic and technological contexts. This study contributes to the development of a contextualized and responsive Islamic jurisprudence for the contemporary era.
